Poker Newbies’ Guide
Before engaging in any given game, you should understand how the game is played. This is true even for online gambling. Even if people have proven time and again that there is such a thing as beginner’s luck, you shouldn’t rely on it at all. Truth is, not everyone is so lucky. What if it fails you? Do you cry bitter tears of defeat then?
Before starting with Internet-based poker, try playing with virtual money initially. This should give you a chance to observe where you’re good at and which skills you need to concentrate on learning or mastering. Remember the old cliché, “Practice makes perfect” and apply it.
After you have pinpointed your strengths and have learned to minimize your weaknesses, you can try playing poker using real money. Do not forget to study your opponents. Unlike live poker, you cannot see your opponents’ facial expression, nervous twitches or any other ‘tells’ which expert players will tell you are invaluable. However, remember that in online poker, there are still ‘tells’ that you can use to your advantage.
For instance, an opponent that takes a lot of time making his move is probably nervous and unsure. This may indicate that he’s new to the game and you can exploit this by paying aggressively. Of course, he may be playing you, in which case, you have to be truly careful in ‘reading’ your online poker opponents.
You should jot down notes about your opponents’ moves. What did he do after the flop? If he raised, then he may have good cards. Check if this is consistent behavior through a series of hands and you can probably tell whether he’s a tight or loose player and what he will do next.
